Job Description:

PRIMARY PURPOSE/GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Philanthropy, the Prospect Development Manager provides leadership to and oversight of the prospect development function within the Division of External Relations and Institutional Advancement (ERIA). The Prospect Development Manager helps guide fundraising efforts by building a prospect management system, including a sustainable pipeline of major and planned gift donors to Scripps College.Using prospecting tools, such as research databases, wealth screening, and data modeling to identify potential prospects, the Prospect Development Manager builds and maintains processes to facilitate the movement of prospects in and out of the prospect pool and through the pipeline. The Prospect Development Manager analyzes the overall prospect pool and targeted groups to support performance, planning, and projections for fundraising.The role is responsible for providing analysis of and suggesting suitable strategies for prospects in relation to institutional fundraising opportunities.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :

Relationship Management

  • Build relationships with senior development office leadership and actively communicate challenges and opportunities as they arise.
  • Prospect Strategy/Portfolio Management: Plan and coordinate prospect strategy and portfolio management and moves management meetings with fundraisers. Help establish and coordinate agendas for these meetings with senior development office leadership.

Relationship Management Reporting

  • Work with Development senior leadership to refine how Scripps defines and measures fundraising/program/relationship manager success and coordinate the development of reports needed to monitor activity and outcomes.
  • Pipeline Management: Support the maturation of the prospect development pipeline through active management and reporting.
  • Orienting and Training Colleagues: Working with senior development leadership team, produce orientation program and trainings for the relationship and prospect management programs.

Relational Database Management

  • Coordinate and help define what relationship management data is recorded, where it is recorded, who records it, how it can be searched, how it can be exported, and what policies govern it.
  • Develop strategies to incorporate common prospect tracking data in Scripps's relationship management system, such as prospect ratings, staff assignments, solicitation goals, strategies, moves, contact reports, proposals, and stages.

Prospect Pool/Base Analysis

  • Utilize College's database, Excel, and/or other statistical program tools to provide detailed descriptive statistics of the prospect pool, such as number and percent of pool at each rating level, prospect stage, donors vs. non-donors, assigned vs. unassigned, geographical location, and other segments.
  • Apply prospect analysis results to inform executive-level decisions for long-term organizational planning, such as setting campaign goals, defining fundraising priorities, event planning and regional initiatives, and making staff-time allocation recommendations.

Prospect Research, Identification, and Qualification

  • Screenings: Evaluate and utilize screening results, including participation in data validation, assessment of source validity, and the creative use of additional sources to analyze capacity, inclination, and readiness.
  • Organization and Fundraising Knowledge: Determine what constitutes a good prospect for Scripps through analysis, conversations with staff, and knowledge of organizational history.
  • Assist in the research and production of briefings for development-related meetings, trips, and events.
  • Participate in the tracking and reviewing of contact reports filed by gift officers in order to assess donor interests, prioritize donors for ratings, and work with others to ensure key data points are documented in the database of record.
  • Active support for the College's Principles of Community and Principles of Diversity in the performance of job duties.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES :

Individuals must possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the essential functions of the position or be able to explain or demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.

  • Ability to leverage emerging technology to develop new ways to identify potential donors.
  • Knowledge of population-based statistics, analytical methods and strategies, data processing and analysis.
  • Experience with major fundraising database systems.
  • Ability to learn new software applications and programs.
  • Excellent planning skills with the ability to identify priorities in a fast-paced, high-visibility environment.
  • Ability to create, interpret and evaluate policy and procedural requirements for prospect research/management and related database management.
  • Must have the ability to define, produce, and analyze reports relevant to prospect management and related data integrity.
  • Familiarity with different reporting interfaces and methods, such as dashboards, on-demand reporting, mobile reporting, and scheduled reports.
  • Must have excellent judgment and discretion with sensitive and highly confidential information.
  • Strong organization skills and ability to perform time-sensitive duties with regular interruptions.
  • Strong written and verbal communications, including strong interpersonal skills.
  • Strong sense of professional ethics and confidentiality standards.
  • Must be proficient with MS Office Suite, especially data manipulation tools, such as mail merge, VLOOKUP, pivot tables, and graphing.

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS :

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor's degree or any combination of education, training or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and ability to perform the job.

3-5 years of experience and expertise in quantitative population-based analytics or a closely related field is required.

Experience working in higher education and a high level of familiarity with fundraising and prospect research tools is preferred.

HOURS & CLASSIFICATION AND STATUS:

This is a regular status, full-time, 12-month, benefits-eligible, exempt position.

The regular hours of this position are Monday-Friday 8:00 am-5:00 pm.Hours may vary due to the needs of the College or department and may include some evenings and weekends.

Salary range: $80,000 to $95,000 annualized.The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty, and training.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY :

Supervises the Prospect Research Coordinator.
